The basic concept of Variable HTML is nothing new. The ability to create an alternate stylesheet that redesigns the pages of your website for a printer has been available for over a decade.

If you were going to write a print media CSS file for this website, you wouldn't print the book background or the navigation, and unless you had a special contract with your advertisers, you could also skip the ads. The CSS file would use {display: none;} directives to eliminate all but the content material, company banner, and copyright.

Variable HTML merely expands on that concept to allow you to design alternate stylesheets based on the size of each visitor's browser window.

Websites are a combination of the variable content that changes from page to page and static content that remains the same on every page. Creating pages that will display in multiple templates naturally requires additional coding for the static content. The maintenance of this additional coding could easily become a major time drain.
